Day 27-NOT a Slow Day
Furnace Fiasco
I cannot make up the stories about this house. Today began so well. I woke up to finally find all of the building permits for the house approved. For just a couple hundred dollars mailed to the city, we can finally have our permits.
Dave headed to the house to work from there because the plumber was working there all day and someone was coming to inspect the furnace. After loading my van with Dave's office and the entire linen closet, I headed to the house too.
The sexist inspector finished checking the furnace and then spoke to the man and showed him a picture (that picture you see above) and told him that the furnace had a corroded secondary heat exchanger (supposedly the arrows point to the corrosion) and that it needed to be replaced. I was standing right there, but was never showed the picture. He turned it off and tagged it as the furnace is unsafe to run at this time due to a potential carbon monoxide leak.
So they scheduled someone to come an hour later to give us a quote to replace the whole unit and get a new air conditioner right away. He was there for 90 minutes (nice guy--he is a former accountant who loves his new job) and gave us 3 reasonable estimates.
While all this was going on, the plumber keep working and got the new sewer stack in and all 3 bathroom sinks set up with sewer lines (Dave thinks the plumbing is pretty--I do like the purple).
Grayson also came again today and pulled nails out of trim, took out the corner hutch, and touched up paint. The corner looks strange without the hutch and the room looks bigger.
By noon, I went home to contact the home warranty people about the furnace and file a claim. They set up an appointment within the hour to inspect the furnace.
In the meantime, Teagan and I spent 2 hours at Home Depot. He picked out a ceiling fan and lamp for his room. We got cold air returns, boxes, plumbing, check on doors, and so many other things.
When the company that the warranty people called arrived, they inspected the furnace and had a completely different story. They claimed that the first people did not even take the furnace apart and that there was no corrosion and that everything was fine. Dave went into the furnace with them and saw mineral deposits, but they wiped right off and saw no signs of rust. He also saw that many parts had not been cleaned. At this point, we had no idea who to trust. We also got a 3rd opinion, but that company could not come inspect it. They told us that if it was corroded it was under the Bryant Warranty yet and replacement parts were covered. I called the original company and discussed it with them. They accused the warranty company of refusing to cover claims. Blah blah!
While all this was happening, I unpacked and we have our fancy bathroom and kitchen underway.
Anyway, the furnace is back on, the tag is hanging on it, a CO detector does not pick up even trace amounts of CO, we will not be using either company for anything in the future, and we are not sure what to do about the furnace at this point--one thing we do know for sure...we are going to need that new air conditioner
It is slightly better than camping.
Tonight Dave finished trimming Lauryn's room after installing new heat registers in the master.
