Day 14--We Got Mail
Unexpected continued
Did we know the house had asbestos when we bought it? Of course we did--it was built in 1950 and had the telltale 9 inch tile visible in multiple places. The screen porch and the breeze way has it and the basement has it, and we had a plan cover it up. But then as the walls came down in the kitchen, we noticed several layers of kitchen flooring--linoleum glued to tile glued to tar paper glued to my wood floor. We really want to save the wood, so I called the asbestos people to check it out.
And it all needs to come out, linoleum (top left), black glue on red tile, and black tar paper on wood floor. Yep, it all needs to come off all the way down to the subfloor--and that costs a lot of money! Luckily, they had an opening and can get it done on Monday for us.
In other news, the look of the house really changed today. Dave and Cortez took out the wall between the kitchen and bathroom and put up the new wall between the bathrooms.
Some treasures were found under the cabinets today. Here is the best one.
Poor Henry, how long did you look for this?
In addition to Cortez, Mary and Jim also came to help tonight. Jim is working hard on getting the woodwork sanded for us.
And yes, we got mail at the new house for the first time today, which answered a nagging question we had, "Where does our mailbox go?" See, we currently have a mailbox on a post next to the road, but our new house is on a park and loop route and the mailboxes are on the houses. Our front door does not have a sidewalk (and currently feet of snow burying it) and the entrance we actually use is the one in back because the driveway is there. THAT is where the mailbox is supposed to go--behind the house. It also made us realize that we need a mailbox. We ordered one and a mid-century decal with our house number. Stay tuned to see what it looks like soon!
