Day 1-Dining Demolition

Lauryn discovering the wall is thicker than anyone expected

Current kitchen space

Day 1

We began today by finishing a project at our current house before the snow storm rolls in and loading up both vehicles with as many tools as we could. By noon, Dave headed to the house to get started and Lauryn and I went to purchase the appliances for the new house. By the time we got there, Dave had all the woodwork off the dining room and master bedroom (we are moving it from the dining room to the master and getting rid of the unmatching woodwork in the master.)

Dave's parents joined us and we were excited to knock down a wall, so everyone picked up a hammer (except Dave's mom, she grabbed the sledge hammer) and knocked down the wall between the kitchen and dining room.

Before long you could see right through there. But the drywall was covered in plaster, so it was much harder than we thought it would be.

Dave's dad sat out there and continued to take it off all day while we worked on other projects.

Lauryn and I took down all the curtains in the bedrooms while Mary helped to vacuum years and years of dust and cobwebs off the walls, windows, and woodwork. The rooms look better without the curtains.

While we worked on removing 50 years of dust, Dave took down another wall. The master has a strange powder room added next to the other bathroom, so we are opening it up and turning it into a new hall bathroom.

So after dinner, I ran to Home Depot for the 3rd time in 24 hours to get a variety of items including a door for the garage (it has a screen door on it, not a real door) and thermostat for the furnace because we cannot turn it down. It started to snow while I was there.

I tried to change the thermostat when I got back, but we did not have correct size screw drivers. Dave had turned the heat off because it was too hot in the house. After working for a couple hours on sanding woodwork (Lori) and patching holes in walls (Dave), we got cold. When we went to turn the heat on, it would not come back on. After several attempts, the thermostat would not work at all. At 10:30, I decided to go to the store for batteries for the thermostat and got stuck in the driveway.  We had so much snow over the icy driveway that I could not get out. Dave to the rescue!

I got to Pick 'n Save right before they closed and grabbed the batteries and some salt for the driveway. After several attempts, we have heat again!!

At midnight, we took a snowy, slippery ride home...hoping the house would be warm and still standing in the morning.

My arch nemesis...the furnace!
